I have owned pet Maltese for 20 years now. Not counting
Camelia, and her
pedigreed descendants
Amazon Jewel and A
rabian Knight, I have had four pet Maltese, two of which passed away in my arms and another in the arms of a close friend not so long ago. This loss has been heart-breaking for me and although some time has gone by, I feel Ramse´s presence around me still.
Following the loss of my first pet, I decided to follow the voice of my heart, fulfill my life´s wish, and establish a Maltese kennel of my own.
Establishing a Maltese kennel in Europe is by far not an easy task. The Maltese breeder community is a very closed-off community where newcomers are unwanted and definitely not appreciated and unwelcome.
Acquiring a dog for breeding in the Czech Republic, for example, is virtually a mission impossible. The mere mention of a show/breeding dog suddenly causes almost a chain reaction of “STAY AWAY” from already established breeders. The vast majority of European Maltese breeders do not even have the decency to answer emails asking for information.
I have been lied to by breeders for whom I have had great respect in the past as
they suddenly turned their back on me.
There were times when I almost gave up on my dream in sheer frustration. On the flip side, I was determined that I was not going to give these aversive breeders that satisfaction because I was doing this for myself and not for anyone else. In a sense, it has been a time of “awakening” for me, as it was a period that showed me clearly who I can trust without any doubt
and who to avoid and for that, I am very grateful.
I have been questioned with regard to my avoidance of Crufts, WDS as well as other EU countries, and so I have decided to address the subject here.
As regards Crufts, I would never go to a country that has unnecessary, ridiculous restrictions in place for dogs entering the country as, for instance, the UK.
With reference to WDS and other EU countries, I need to state the following:
My dogs have little chance of achieving placement at these events due to the fact that, a) I am not an experienced groomer, and many judges evaluate the look rather than the breed standard.
There are also other various circumstances, which I will not mention here. This is the opinion I have reached following my own experience. b) I am just one person traveling by public transport and overnighting at hotels. It does make things extremely difficult when carrying dogs and equipment. c) I rely on an ordinary employee´s income and do not have wealthy sponsors to back me up. I do what I can because I do it out of love.
